Explore the medium of etching with a variety of tools and techniques. Learn to work with acid, hard ground, soft ground, drypoint, aquatints, chine collé and other techniques, and acquire the skills to transfer your printing plates onto paper using a printing press. Whether you’re producing traditional editioned prints or investigating other methods of printing, you can explore the exciting range of results that are possible through the etching process. Using self-generated ideas, enjoy creating one or more series of editioned works.

Angus Fisher

Angus Fisher is a practising printmaker who is skilled in using intricate, traditional techniques to represent the natural world. Angus is a graduate of the National Art School and is currently represented by Australian Galleries, where he exhibits regularly. He has worked as an artist and teacher around Australia and as an archaeological illustrator in Greece. Angus is currently working towards an exhibition in Sydney as well as the creation of a limited edition series of books. Watch Angus producing his prints at

Your lecturer will discuss specific requirements in the first class. For the first class bring whatever materials you have available including materials from the following list:

  • Ideas - such as drawings, photos, images from books, maps, diagrams, text as subject matter for class projects
  • Sketch book to jot down notes and drawing media such as charcoal and pencils
  • Etching needle or sharp pointed implement such as a compass point
  • Protective clothing such as an old shirt or apron, covered footwear
  • Particle mask (can be purchased from Bunnings)
  • Other equipment

Angus Fisher will discuss different types of printing papers and zinc plates which you will be able to purchase from Parkers Art Supplies on campus at NAS. Angus will take you over to Parkers on the first day to discuss the different plates and papers.

The National Art School will supply all printing inks and a selected range of other equipment.

The teacher will advise on additional materials as the course progresses.
