Do you want to learn practical drawing techniques and encourage your creativity to emerge in a supportive studio environment? Discover how to see and draw with proportion and perspective, and how to work from small studies to larger, sustained drawings. Learn about the importance of line, tone, composition and mark-making and explore the mediums of graphite, charcoal and ink. Rachel Fairfax sets projects and gives you the opportunity to draw still life scenes and work from the life model. She gives demonstrations, group exercises and one-to-one tuition and guides you in developing your own way of seeing and drawing.

Stephanie Monteith

Stephanie Monteith is a Sydney-based artist who uses processes that involve direct observation of carefully constructed still life set-ups. She is interested in capturing the variety of light effects upon objects and specialises in drawing, oil painting and watercolour. Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (first class honours) and a Master of Fine Arts from UNSW Art & Design. For more than 20 years Stephanie has been an exhibiting artist and she has over 15 years experience as a lecturer in the visual arts. A finalist in many prize exhibitions, including The Paddington Art Prize, The Sir John Sulman Prize, The Mosman Art Prize, The Doug Moran National Portrait Prize and the Helen Lempriere Travelling Art Scholarship; Stephanie has also received an Australian Post Graduate Award Scholarship, as well as a number of other grants and artist residencies. 

For the first night bring:

  • A4 sketchbook
  • set of graphite pencils from 2B to 8B
  • charcoal pencil
  • pencil sharpener or Stanley knife
  • pencil eraser
  • 2 bulldog clips
  • willow charcoal
  • compressed charcoal
  • fixative spray
  • 1 pad of A2 cartridge paper

Other materials will be used throughout the course – these will be discussed on the first evening.
