Learn the oil painting techniques of the great masters and be inspired by artworks from the exhibition Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age at the Art Gallery of NSW, with paintings drawn from the Netherlands national collection at the Rijksmuseum. After a tour of the exhibition, Michelle Hiscock will introduce you to the artistic conventions of this important period of art, as well as the fundamental techniques of classical oil painting, through demonstrations of methods and materials. Michelle will introduce you to traditional skills such as support preparation, coloured grounds, composition, tonal underpainting, palette-setting, colour-mixing and structuring oil paint in layers. As well as being inspired by paintings from great masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Hals, you will have the opportunity to paint a full-scale fragment of a face from a painting of your choice.
