This beginner course offers stimulating ways to start making unique drawings and will inspire you with the confidence to develop your perceptions of the world around you. It offers guided instructions which will enable you to learn solid drawing skills. Deborah Marks teaches you about the visual elements of line, shape and tone and how to use them to create planes and volumes, as well as how to compose these elements into cohesive, balanced spatial arrangements. She sets up a variety of subjects for you to draw from, including interesting objects from still life scenarios, and introduces you to drawing from life with the nude model. She demonstrates many different drawing techniques, including intuitive gesture drawing, thumbnail sketching, collage techniques and sustained line and tonal drawing, using mediums such as charcoal, charcoal pencil, ink and acrylic.

Deborah Marks

Deborah Marks, who teaches at the National Art School, completed a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, in 2007. Her work is represented in public and private collections and has been exhibited in the Blake Prize and the Portia Geach Memorial Award. She completed a Master of Fine Arts degree and has held solo exhibitions in Sydney and Germany.


  • Cartridge Paper A1 size, 20 sheets, or pad
  • Montval Watercolour Paper (or similar) (x 2 sheets) 300gms 75 x 55cm approx.

  • 2 pieces compressed charcoal –round type e.g. Omega brand
  • 4 charcoal pencils, black, soft

Ink and Paint

  • Gesso primer e.g. Matisse 250ml


  • 1 brush, bristle size 12
  • 1 cheap large house painting brush e.g. 5-10cm wide


  • Hard white eraser eg. Staedtler


  • Glue (PVA) 500ml
