This course expands the idea of drawing, taking you from traditional observational methods and application of materials towards a contemporary approach to art-making. Judith White presents structured classes and gives demonstrations on the use of drawing tools such as charcoal, inks, crayons, pencils and acrylic. She leads you through a broad range of ways to interpret different subjects such as still life, landscape and interiors, as well as introducing non-figurative ideas.

Judith White

Judith White trained at the National Art School, has a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Fine Arts from Sydney University, and is a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute. She has won over a dozen major awards, including the Mosman Art Prize, the Maitland Art Prize and the Fleurieu Peninsula McLaren Vale Prize. Judith has been exhibiting and teaching throughout Australia for over 35 years. In 2015 she was invited to conduct workshops in Helsinki, Finland, for the National Artists Association. She has collaborated with photographer Michel Brouet and musician Rachel Scott in several performance projects culminating in the Painted Bach Project at the City of Perth Winter Arts Festival in 2016. Her work is represented in public and private collections in Australia, Japan, the UK and New Zealand.


  • Large cartridge paper Sketch Book A2 size; a smaller size will not be sufficient
  • 2 sheets of watercolour paper medium weight (around 250grms or more)

From the newsagent;

  • Packet or roll of brown wrapping paper
  • Packet of white tissue paper

From the Hardware Store

  • Small bottle of Aquadhere glue (PVA)
  • Wide stiff bristle house-painting type brush at least 70cm (3 inch)

Other materials:

  • Charcoal; Large fat sticks of Willow (at least 2). If possible very black soft blocks of charcoal are ideal. Several sticks of medium (thin) willow charcoal Compressed charcoal 1 stick of soft 6B
  • 6B charcoal pencil
  • Rubber
  • White Conte Stick
  • 4B and 6B pencil
  • Water soluble carbon pencil 6B; suggest Wolff’s Carbon Pencil
  • Inks; Black, Burnt Sienna (suggest Sennelier or Scmincke Gold Ochre)
  • Oil Pastels or Oil sticks; These need to be Artist’s quality. (Holbein or Sennelier) Colours; Black, White, Red, Blue.
  • Acrylic Paint; White, Black, Napthol Red (or any warm Red), Ultra Marine Blue.
  • Bottle of Baby Oil
  • Small bottle of removable masking fluid
  • Scissors
  • Blade cutter knife
  • Flat palettes; old plates (at least 2) or piece of plastic is ideal
  • Other brushes
  • Wide soft wash brush
  • Flat medium size bristle brush
  • Apron
  • ‘Baby wipes’ make excellent hand cleaners
