Janet Haslett’s practice concerns time and its affect on perceptions. Her observational and research based projects into landscapes, culture and history focus on the slippage between now and then, the real and the imagined as she reinterprets the past to reorient it in the present.
Her paintings, drawings and sculptures are created using a wide range of materials from traditional mediums to recycled remnants from her studio. Her paintings may evolve into sculptures, while her sculptures evolve fromfinding the marvellous in mundane, overlooked, everyday objects.
Janet's work was most recently included in the Rumah Lebah Gallery's inaugural exhibition Contemporary Art in the Secret site of Imogiri, Java, as a parallel event to Yogyakarta's ART|JOG17, the Hill End Table: Food, Fire, Art at the Bathurst Regional Art Gallery, Art Now Revisited at Kensington Contemporary and Fear of Forgetting at Contact Sheet, Sydney. She has been awarded residencies at the Rumah Leah Gallery, Indonesia, the British School at Rome, ArtSpace Sydney and the Pata Paris Studio and in November 2017 she travelled to Italy to undertake research for a 2018 residency with GranitiMurales, in Graniti, Sicily. Her work is held in private and public collections in Australia and overseas.
Janet Haslett holds a Master of Fine Art (Painting) and a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) from the National Art School, Sydney and an Advanced Diploma of Fine Art from the Sydney Gallery School, NSW. She is currently a sessional lecturer in the Drawing Department at the National Art School, Sydney and her work is held in private and public collections in Australia and overseas.
