The Dobell School

The Dobell School was initiated in 1988 by the NAS and the Curriculum Support and Performing Arts Units of the NSW Department of Education and Training (DET).

It is designed to provide visual art education opportunities for NSW secondary school students who do not have access to the teaching, studios and facilities available at a tertiary art school.

Approximately 60 selected high school students participate in the three day studio workshop and exhibition held in April each year. Practising artists tutor the students in one of the following four workshops on offer:

  • DRAWING THE NUDE LIFE MODEL

  • PORTRAIT DRAWING

  • DRAWING THE CLOTHED LIFE MODEL

  • EXPERIMENTAL DRAWING

The engagement and immersion in art for these students is highly beneficial as it broadens their perceptions of the art world whilst building their confidence to create and make art.

The Dobell School is generously supported by the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation which encourages young artists to develop their skills in all areas of the visual arts which in turn contributes to a vibrant expression through the visual arts of our culture.
