Sculpture

Sculpture at the NAS offers a diverse range of programs. These emphasise the exploration of conceptual and aesthetic development through the teaching of specific technical skills in an expansive and experimental approach, which encourages innovation.

Students are taught the origins and history of sculptural language in relation to the development of their own practice and exposed to a number of levels of critical evaluation of their studio work.

This includes:

  • discussion with lecturers on a one to one basis

  • group discussions

  • critique involving a number of lecturers

  • professional practice which underpins their studio work

Students acquire a thorough knowledge of traditional and non- traditional materials, usages and associated methodologies. The sculpture department facilities include studios for First, Second and Third Year students.

Workshop areas include

  • a foundry

  • woodworking area

  • metal fabrication area

  • stone carving area

  • wet area (for modelling and plaster casting)

  • a tool bay housing

  • a large range of specialist hand tools and power tools

Sydney has a rich history of sculpture. NAS fosters this culture by employing eminent practising and exhibiting sculptors to teach our own emerging artists.
