Director's Introduction

The aim of the NAS is to provide a truly liberal education in the culture of art and an understanding of the importance of that culture to our society.

Every degree course has been designed to impart the combined knowledge and artistic skills requisite for students from Australia and all over the world to reach their own potential whether it be as an artist, art historian or theoretician.

The School’s values are informed by the perpetual debate about the place of art in contemporary society and the basic premise that drawing is fundamental to an understanding of visual language. Our philosophy brings together the cornerstones of art making: highly developed drawing skills, a comprehensive understanding of studio methods and techniques and a knowledge of art history and theory that involves being profoundly aware of the past whilst recognising and engaging with the present.

With the greater concentration on outcomes in a world that focuses on industry based solutions, our students have the capacity to influence Australia's economic and cultural directions by being at the forefront of the creative process.

Students have access to the vast experience and skills-base of over 100 expert and practising artists and academics. These teachers who are distinguished in their fields, provide intensive tuition and encourage students to share ideas and debate issues with teachers and peers whilst exploring the technical and conceptual directions of their work.

The National Art School is the oldest visual arts institute in Australia. It has a rich tradition of artistic practice and a highly significant alumni.

I invite you to consider studying at the NAS located at the heritage-listed Darlinghurst Gaol, in an environment aesthetically sympathetic to the study of the visual arts and ideally located in the commercial and cultural heart of Sydney.
